Medical Qualification Recognition

  • Pathways to recognition – There are specific registration pathways available for internationally trained medical practitioners, which we can assist you in navigating. The different pathways depend on where you obtained your primary medical degree, and if you have completed recognised specialist training.
    • Specialist pathway – Overseas-trained GP’s applying for assessment of comparability to the standard of a specialist trained in General Practice.
    • Competent Authority pathway – For overseas-trained non-specialists, but is also available to specialists, including general practitioners. This pathway leads to general registration.
    • Standard pathway – For IMGs seeking general registration with the Board. This pathway applies to IMGs who are not eligible for the Competent Authority pathway or the Specialist pathway.
  • Specialist College Assessment – Assesses comparability against the criteria for an Australian-trained specialist in the same field:
    • Fully Comparable Assessment – GPs are considered directly comparable to Australian trained GPs and require no further exams, training or supervision to obtain Fellowship. These GPs are able to claim the highest Medicare rebates.
    • Partially Comparable Assessment – GPs will undertake either further training or supervised assessment before applying for Fellowship.
    • Not Comparable Assessment – GPs will be required to enter into a specialist training program.
  • AHPRA registration – The Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA) will approve your registration, taking into consideration your college outcome and also checking you meet the required English Language standards and are able to supply ten years of Certificates of Good Standing.
