Skin allergies are caused by the immune system’s reaction to specific substances called allergens. These allergens can vary widely and include:
- Metals: Nickel in jewelry or belts.
- Chemicals: Fragrances, preservatives, or dyes in cosmetics and cleaning products.
- Plants: Contact with poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac.
- Latex: Found in gloves, balloons, and certain medical devices.
- Medications: Certain topical or systemic drugs can cause allergic reactions.
- Food: Allergens in food can sometimes cause skin reactions, especially in individuals with food allergies.
- Insects: Stings or bites from insects like mosquitoes or bees.
When these substances come into contact with the skin, the immune system mistakenly identifies them as harmful, triggering inflammation and other allergic symptoms.
