Women’s Health Services
Family Doctor clinics provide comprehensive women’s health services across all life stages. From adolescence through to menopause and beyond, our GPs support women with preventive screening, reproductive health, mental health, and chronic disease management. Female GPs are available at many of our 114+ clinics across Australia for patients who prefer a female doctor.
Our Women’s Health Services
Cervical Screening
The National Cervical Screening Program recommends that women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 have a cervical screening test (HPV test) every five years. This test has replaced the traditional Pap smear and is more effective at detecting the human papillomavirus (HPV) that can lead to cervical cancer. Our GPs can perform cervical screening tests and discuss your results and any follow-up needed.
Contraception
Our GPs can help you choose the contraceptive method that best suits your health, lifestyle, and family planning goals. Options include the oral contraceptive pill, long-acting reversible contraceptives such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and hormonal implants (Implanon), injectable contraception, and emergency contraception. Some clinics also offer IUD and implant insertion and removal on-site.
Pregnancy and Antenatal Care
Family Doctor clinics offer shared antenatal care in partnership with your chosen hospital or birthing centre. Our GPs provide first trimester screening, routine pregnancy monitoring, gestational diabetes screening, and postnatal check-ups for both mother and baby. We can also assist with pre-conception planning and fertility referrals.
Menopause Support
Menopause affects every woman differently. Our GPs can help you manage symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbance, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Treatment options include menopausal hormone therapy (MHT, formerly known as HRT), non-hormonal medications, lifestyle modifications, and bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk.
Breast Health
Our GPs can perform clinical breast examinations and refer you for mammography or ultrasound if needed. Women aged 50 to 74 are eligible for free two-yearly mammograms through BreastScreen Australia. If you notice any changes in your breasts such as a new lump, nipple discharge, or skin changes, see your GP promptly for assessment.
Mental Health
Women experience unique mental health challenges including perinatal anxiety and depression, premenstrual mood disorders, and the psychological impacts of menopause. Our GPs can provide Mental Health Treatment Plans, prescribe medication where appropriate, and refer you to psychologists or psychiatrists. We also offer postnatal depression screening as part of routine postnatal care.
